Flavour, fragrance, and bioscience specialist IFF has released its latest research report, "GLP-1 Consumer Moments of Opportunity", presenting a comprehensive product formulation roadmap designed to address the changing dietary habits of consumers taking GLP-1 receptor agonist medications.

Developed in partnership with AI-driven market research agency InsightsNow, the study combines proprietary consumer research among GLP-1 patients, snacking behaviour analysis, an audit of more than 25,000 social media posts, and behavioural intelligence data captured via the Claira™ platform.

The findings indicate that while commercial conversation across the food sector has largely focused on reduced appetite and overall volume contraction, product developers face a far more nuanced shift in daily eating patterns. Rather than eliminating food categories entirely, GLP-1 patients are actively re-evaluating nutritional composition, sensory intensity, portion sizes, and emotional comfort across distinct moments throughout the day.

"What GLP-1 users need from food and beverage products depends on the moment, and those needs can change many times throughout the day," said Yuvraj Arora, President of IFF Taste.

"The most successful innovations will be designed around the occasions that matter most to consumers, delivering the right balance of nutrition, enjoyment and functionality for each one. Understanding these moments can unlock entirely new avenues for innovation."

Ten Daily Occasions for Food and Drink Formulation

To guide commercial research and development (R&D) teams, the report classifies the dietary needs of GLP-1 consumers into ten specific daily consumption moments:

🌅 Protein-First Wake-Up: Morning eating occasions where consumers require convenient, appealing formats to kickstart daily macronutrient targets without gastrointestinal heaviness.

🥪 Midday Bridge: Late-morning to early-afternoon intervals where shoppers look for nourishing, sustained satiety between meals without feeling overly full.

💊 Post-Dose Recovery Window: Critical periods following medication administration when users experience heightened nausea, digestive sensitivity, or sensory aversion, creating demand for bland, soothing, and easily digestible liquid or semi-solid formats.

🚗 On-the-Go Fuel Stop: Fast-paced routine intervals requiring portable, spill-proof packaging and modular, flexible portion sizes.

🛋️ End-of-Day Emotional Reset: Decompression periods following work or study where consumers seek psychological comfort through familiar flavour profiles and indulgent, creamy textures.

🍫 Planned Indulgence: Deliberate, intentional eating occasions where consumers choose premium, small-portion treats delivering intense flavour and sensory satisfaction.

🔍 Nutritional Insurance Check: Evening audits where consumers evaluate whether their reduced daily intake met essential vitamin, mineral, and protein baselines, driving demand for nutrient-dense toppers or nightcaps.

🏋️ Post-Workout Reward: Exercise recovery moments pairing refreshing sensory attributes with complete proteins and electrolytes.

🍽️ Social Table Moment: Shared dining environments where GLP-1 users look for culturally familiar, shareable, and discreet formats that allow them to participate without drawing attention to dietary restrictions.

✅ Compliance Snack: Practical snack choices that reassure consumers that their food selections align with their overall weight-management and metabolic health programmes.

The Hydration Plus Framework for Beverage Developers

Beyond solid food and snacking, the research identifies liquid refreshment as one of the fastest-growing development areas for GLP-1 formulations.

Because GLP-1 medications alter gastric emptying rates and can suppress natural thirst cues alongside appetite, maintaining fluid and electrolyte balance represents an ongoing physiological challenge. Rather than treating hydration as a basic commodity, IFF outlines five distinct functional need states under its "Hydration Plus" framework:

Replenish: Rapid electrolyte and mineral restoration following fluid loss or medication-induced nausea.

Maintain: Baseline all-day hydration formulated with light, non-cloying flavour systems.

Revitalise: Clean-label functional boosts pairing hydration with gentle, steady-release energy or cognitive actives.

Perform: High-performance hydration tailored to physical exercise and muscle support.

Connect: Sophisticated, non-alcoholic botanical and social drinks that facilitate participation in hospitality settings.

Balancing Functional Nutrition and Sensory Appeal

The report builds upon IFF's 2025 GLP-1 Consumer Opportunity Outlook, providing ingredient formulators with flavour modulation, protein texturising, and taste masking tools to overcome the sensory challenges common to nutrient-dense formulations.

"One of the clearest findings is that nutrition isn't the only thing consumers are thinking about," said Mark Haupt, Chief Medical Officer and Vice President of Health Sciences R&D for IFF Health & Biosciences. "What remains constant is the desire for foods and beverages that help them meet their health goals while still enjoying the experience."

As pharmaceutical weight-loss treatments continue to achieve mainstream consumer adoption, the findings underline the necessity for consumer packaged goods (CPG) brands to move beyond generic "diet" propositions. By tailoring formulations around specific daily physiological windows—such as post-dose sensitivity, midday satiety, and planned indulgence—food and drink manufacturers can protect volume and build long-term brand loyalty among medicated consumers.
