Takis®, the tortilla chip brand owned by Barcel USA, has announced plans to remove artificial colours and tertiary butylhydroquinone (TBHQ) across its entire product portfolio. This initiative forms part of a broader programme of innovation aimed at meeting changing consumer expectations regarding product ingredients while maintaining the brand's established flavour profiles.
The company has commenced a phased rollout of its reformulated snack range, with full implementation expected across all product lines by the end of 2026. This transition includes flagship products such as Takis Fuego® and Takis Blue Heat™, as well as the brand's newer innovations.
Products such as Takis Pix™, Xtreme Lime™, and Jalapeño were formulated without artificial colours from their initial launch, consistent with the brand's objective of delivering its signature flavour intensity without these additives.
Retail Rollout and Identification
The updated versions of these products are currently being distributed to retailers across the United States, including Walmart. To ensure consumers and retail staff can identify the reformulated products during the transition period, the company has introduced a "No Artificial Colours Added" label on the front of the packaging.
Barcel USA notes that both original and reformulated versions of the products may be present on shelves as retailers continue to manage and rotate their current stock.
Alignment with Global Standards
This portfolio update follows the broader commitment of Grupo Bimbo, the parent company of Barcel USA, to eliminate artificial colours from its global product range by the end of 2026. By aligning its North American operations with these global sustainability and ingredient standards, the company aims to ensure consistency across its international supply chain and product offerings.
