The latest food and beverage industry news and trend analysis

Laird Superfood, Inc. has announced a significant expansion of its Hydrate product line, introducing two new functional flavours and broadening its packaging formats to target the on-the-go convenience market.

The move reinforces the company’s strategy to disrupt the traditional sports drink category with "clean label" alternatives, offering formulations based on minimally processed, real-food ingredients rather than synthetic additives.

Flavour Innovation and Sourcing

The expansion adds two distinct profiles to the portfolio, both leveraging exotic fruit sourcing:

  • Wild Berry: A formulation featuring a blend of antioxidant-rich maqui, calafate, and murta berries sourced from Patagonia.

  • Tropical Punch: A fruit blend enhanced with real orange oil.

Nutritional Architecture: The 'Aquamin' Advantage

A key differentiator for the Hydrate line is the inclusion of Aquamin™, a red marine algae ingredient. This component provides bioavailable, seaweed-derived calcium and magnesium, alongside more than 70 trace minerals.

The formulation strategy prioritises natural replenishment:

  • Sweetener Profile: The fruit-flavoured options are lightly sweetened with monk fruit to ensure zero added sugar. The 'Original' variant contains only two ingredients: coconut water and Aquamin.

  • Electrolytes: Each product delivers naturally occurring sodium and potassium to replenish the body without the use of artificial ingredients often found in legacy sports drinks.

New Formats and Assortment

To increase accessibility and trial, Laird Superfood has also introduced two new SKU configurations:

  • Variety Pack: A sampler containing all five Hydrate flavours (Lemon, Mango-Pineapple, Original, Tropical Punch, and Wild Berry).

  • Single-Serve Sticks: The 'Original' flavour is now available in convenient single-serve packets, joining the existing 8-ounce bag format.

Jason Vieth, CEO of Laird Superfood, commented on the market gap the line intends to fill:

"It's surprising that many athletes still rely on processed sports drinks, and those who use hydration powders often find they're also filled with artificial ingredients and excessive sugars. At Laird Superfood, we're committed to making healthy hydration easy with our natural, clean products that empower people to make nutritious choices without compromising taste or performance."
