The latest food and beverage industry news and trend analysis

Origin Materials, Inc., a sustainable materials technology company, has announced a strategic partnership with Matrix Bottling Group to initiate the mass production of beverages utilizing 100% recyclable PET caps.

The collaboration aims to accelerate the beverage industry's transition toward "mono-material" packaging—where both the bottle and the cap are made from the same plastic resin (PET), significantly streamlining the recycling process and improving the quality of post-consumer recycled (PCR) streams.

Removing Friction for Beverage Brands

A significant hurdle in transitioning to novel packaging technologies is the operational friction at the bottling level. Brands often face challenges when requiring contract manufacturers to integrate new closure systems into existing high-speed filling lines.

By partnering directly with a national co-packer like Matrix Bottling Group, Origin is effectively creating a turnkey solution.

Matrix will provide the bottling and capping services specifically optimised for Origin’s PET caps, allowing its customer base—which ranges from agile startups to global marquee brands—to seamlessly upgrade their packaging without taking on independent operational risk.

John Bissell, CEO of Origin Materials, highlighted this strategic go-to-market approach: "Brands already need to work with their bottling partners to switch to PET caps. By partnering directly with progressive bottling companies like Matrix, Origin will remove a potential barrier to adoption and make it even easier for brands of all sizes to switch to PET closures."

Technological Breakthrough: Thermoformed PET

Currently, the vast majority of beverage caps are manufactured using polypropylene (PP) or high-density polyethene (HDPE) via traditional injection or compression moulding.

Origin’s PET caps represent a structural departure from this norm. The caps are manufactured using thermoforming technology, which allows them to be produced using 100% post-consumer recycled (PCR) material.

For packaging engineers and supply chain buyers, the Origin caps offer several key functional advantages over legacy closures:

  • Mono-Material Recyclability: Eliminates the need to separate the cap from the bottle during the recycling process.

  • Lightweighting: The thermoforming process enables a lighter overall packaging profile.

  • Enhanced Barrier Properties: PET provides a superior gas and moisture barrier compared to HDPE, potentially extending the shelf life of sensitive beverages.

Rollout Strategy

The partnership will initially focus on the mass production of the industry-standard 28 mm cap format, with plans to expand into other closure dimensions as the project scales.

Operations will commence at Matrix Bottling Group's facility in Las Vegas, Nevada. However, the companies noted the potential for rapid scaling, citing synergies across Matrix's network of multiple state-of-the-art U.S. locations.

Baze Melamed, Director of Sales of Matrix Bottling Group, commented on the broader industry impact:

"For the packaging industry, this partnership represents a significant step forward for the mass adoption of PET caps and mono-material containers. It made sense to bring together our capabilities and customer base with Origin's PET cap, a remarkable innovation driving recyclability and packaging performance."
