Hormel Foods Corporation has announced the appointment of Donald Monk as its first-ever Chief Technology Officer (CTO), effective March 23. This newly created executive position signals a major strategic commitment by the global branded food company to accelerate its digital transformation and embed advanced data capabilities across its operations.
As the company's senior-most technology leader, Monk is tasked with envisioning and executing an enterprise-wide technology, digital, and data strategy designed to unlock long-term business growth and operational agility.
Heavyweight Executive Pedigree
Monk brings a massive CPG and agribusiness pedigree to Hormel, boasting over 35 years of experience leading complex technology organisations. His background is uniquely suited to the scale and supply-chain complexities of a Fortune 500 food manufacturer.
General Mills: Monk spent 33 years at the consumer foods giant, ultimately rising to the role of Chief Information Officer (CIO). During his tenure, he directed global technology strategy, delivery, and operations across the company's international footprint.
Cargill: Most recently, Monk served as Senior Vice President of Strategy, Governance and Transformation for Cargill's digital technology and data organisation. His remit included guiding global strategy across people, process, analytics, artificial intelligence (AI), and technology governance.
Modernising the Tech Stack
The creation of a dedicated CTO role at the enterprise level highlights a broader trend within the legacy FMCG sector: recognising technology not merely as an IT support function, but as a core driver of commercial and operational strategy.
For Hormel, this appointment coincides with a broader portfolio optimisation—such as its recent divestment of commodity turkey assets to focus on value-added brands. A modernised tech stack is increasingly critical for managing these optimised supply chains, deploying predictive AI for inventory management, and leveraging data for targeted consumer marketing.
John Ghingo, President of Hormel Foods, emphasised the critical nature of the appointment for the company's future operational capabilities.
"Don is an exceptional technology leader with a proven track record of transforming large, global organisations and building modern digital capabilities that unlock business growth," Ghingo stated. "As we continue to prioritise the modernisation of our technology and data platforms, Don's experience and leadership will be critical in enhancing the capabilities that empower our business. We are thrilled to welcome him to Hormel Foods."
Monk holds a Master of Science in software engineering from the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities and a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Minnesota State University, Mankato.
