ProAmpac, a global leader in flexible packaging and material science, has announced the expansion of its ProActive Recyclable® RP-2000 High Barrier Series. The enhanced platform offers a curbside recyclable, fibre-based alternative designed to help brands transition away from traditional non-recyclable multilayer structures, such as paper/foil and paper/metalized polyethylene terephthalate (METPET) laminations.

The launch targets the "sensitive dry food" category, addressing a critical gap in sustainable packaging where high barrier protection against oxygen and moisture is non-negotiable for product shelf life.

The 'Fiberization' of Packaging

The RP-2000 expansion supports what ProAmpac terms the "Fiberization of Packaging®" movement—a shift where brands increasingly seek paper-based solutions to meet consumer sustainability expectations.

Hesam Tabatabaei, Chief Technology Officer at ProAmpac, emphasised the balance between sustainability and performance:

"As adoption of fibre-based structures accelerates, it is critical that ProAmpac continues to expand the functional performance envelope of paper-based materials. These technologies enable brands to transition to curbside recyclable packaging while maintaining required barrier properties, package integrity, and filling-line efficiency."

Technical Specifications and Line Performance

A key barrier to adoption for paper-based flexibles has often been runnability on high-speed lines. ProAmpac claims the RP-2000 platform addresses this by serving as a "drop-in" solution.

Adam Edinger, Global Innovation Engineer, confirmed the material's operational readiness: "RP-2000 High Barrier platform was created to give brands a drop-in curbside recyclable solution with minimum adjustment on filling lines and has successfully trialled on a super high-speed HFFS line running up to 900 packs per minute."

Key Material Attributes:

  • Barrier Protection: Strong oxygen and moisture barriers suitable for oatmeal, granola, spices, dried fruits, and nuts.

  • Durability: Engineered for excellent flex-crack resistance to maintain barrier integrity during handling and folding.

  • Aesthetics: High-quality printing capabilities on natural kraft, bleached, or clay-coated paper.

Applications

The series is designed for flexibility across common package styles, available in both rollstock and various pouch formats. This versatility allows manufacturers of dry goods to migrate to a recyclable format without redesigning their entire packaging architecture or sacrificing production speed.
